SOME COMMON QUESTIONS

How does an evaporative cooler work?

A pump circulates water from the reservoir into a cooling pad, which becomes very wet. A fan or blower draws warm air from outside through the wet pad, and as it passes through the pad evaporation cools it. The trick is to get as much cooling as possible and Breezair® has the highest cooling performance of any such Evaporative cooler in the world.

What is the power consumption?

It varies from model to model, but by comparison with refrigerated systems, evaporative coolers use about one tenth of the electrical energy, - so they are very inexpensive to operate.

How much water does an evaporative cooler use?

That depends on the Relative Humidity on the day and on the speed at which the cooler is operating and the size of the Cooler.

For fully installed Evaporative Coolers, which have the water supply permanently connected, the water consumption is approximately between 4.5 and 10 gallons per hour, and sometimes more in higher dry bulb weather conditions.

How much maintenance does it need?

Very little. Depending on the degree of pollution in the environment (mainly dust and dirt) you will only need to clean the water reservoir at the end of each season, more often in very dirty areas. The Aspen Pad will need cleaning also and eventually it will need replacing - we recommend every 3 years, but many Aspen Pad last much longer. Just take the pads out and gently hose them off.

When using the rigid media, Chillcel™, available in the Breezair® cooler, the maintenance is much the same. However if you install the Breezair® optional accessories this maintenance can be reduced. Correctly maintained Chillcel™ can last 5-8 years.

How do you fill it with water?

The installed coolers are connected permanently to the water supply and a float valve controls the water.

Does the filter media clean the air?

Yes, it catches most of the dust and many smaller particles such as pollens, both of which cause human discomfort. Of course you must keep the filters clean.

Will the cooler work in high humidity areas?

Yes, but to a lesser extent. In high humidity conditions the amount of evaporation is reduced. It is the evaporation, which produces the cooling. When evaporation occurs the water is dissolved into the air as a vapor - you cannot see it, but it is there. When the air has a high humidity it already has large amounts of vapor, so we cannot dissolve much more water and this reduces the amount of evaporation, which can occur.

What is the maximum recommended humidity?

For best results we need a maximum relative humidity at the hottest part of the day of about 70%. This will provide a minimum temperature reduction of between 8 and 10°F.

How much will it reduce the temperature?

That depends on the temperature and humidity of the ambient air. Referring to the“Evaporative cooler supply temperature chart (80 or 90% efficiency)” you will get the answerfor specific ambient conditions.

For example, at a temperature of 90°F and a humidity of 40% the air supply will be at 73°C - a drop in temperature of 17 degrees.

Does it increase the humidity?

Yes, the humidity will increase, but it will not be evident unless you close the room up. The room must never be closed up – leave a window and/or a door open to enjoy the fresh cool air, and you will never notice the small increase in humidity. Remember, at low temperatures, humidity increases the feeling of coolness and a very dry atmosphere causes distress, overworking the humidifying action of the nasal passages.

Why must the room be left open?

For best results, always allow the air from the cooler to flow through the room. This ensures that you get a constant supply of fresh cool air and that the warm and stale air is pushed out.

Are they good for health?

They are very good for health. They clean the air, they use 100% fresh air, they do not dry the air out like refrigerated machines, they maintain a very healthy level of moisture which is good, not only for people, but also for furniture, flowers, books etc., and..... they do not create static electricity in the floor coverings. Many asthma sufferers receive great relief byusing evaporative air coolers.
